Ribolla Giallo, Nero d'Avola
GROWING
Soil Type: Rocky, volcanic soils with a complex mix of mineral-rich Ironstone, Dolerite Green Basalt, and Jasper
Mt Camel Vineyard of the Chalmers family in Heathcote (VIC)
WINEMAKING
This is a blend of 70% Ribolla Giallo and 30% Nero D’avola
Each variety was fermented and aged separately in 100% stainless steel
The blend happened spontaneously when Dane sampled both wines directly from the tanks located side by side, leading to an inspired decision
The result was a revelation—the blend became greater than the sum of its parts
WHAT'S GOOD?
Drinks like a light red/dark rosé and should be consumed chilled
2021 was a vintage with standout quality, wines were initially intended as stand-alone ones
The Ribolla Giallo component would have been Australia’s first-ever release of the variety, from the country’s only vineyard planting of Ribolla
The label is a tribute to the hospitality industry which suffered during the pandemic lockdowns; and celebrates the resilience and beauty that will rise from adversity
Note from the winemaker:
"It was a particularly difficult decision to blend these wines as I had to consider that this Ribolla Giallo component would have been the first Ribollo Giallo to be released in Australia, and from the only vineyard plantings of the variety in this country.
But, beauty has to have the final say and I think it was a good decision.
The subsequent wine is stellar on so many levels !”
